Artificial insemination refers to assisted reproduction—that is, a medical procedure designed to induce pregnancy.
A distinction is made here: On the one hand, there is the option of fertilizing the egg inside the mother’s body by strategically placing the father’s (or a donor’s) sperm inside her body. This is referred to as insemination. On the other hand, there is what is known as in vitro fertilization. With this method, the egg and sperm are brought together in a test tube—that is, outside the mother’s body. If the sperm have sufficient motility, they are placed in the test tube and are expected to find their own way to and into the egg. If sperm motility is limited, it is possible to perform a procedure known as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). In this procedure, the sperm are injected directly into the egg.

Artificial insemination is generally considered when a couple has been unable to conceive for more than a year. Of course, when considering this option, all potential risks, financial aspects, and legal considerations must be clarified, and decisions should always be made in consultation with doctors.
However, you should also keep in mind—both for yourself and together with your partner—that the decision to undergo artificial insemination can also involve a great deal of emotional stress. Not every attempt leads to immediate success, and potential setbacks can pose a risk to your relationship that should not be underestimated.
Sperm donation is permitted in Austria
As explained above, sperm donation is permitted in Austria. Egg donation, on the other hand, is prohibited. In such cases, fertility clinics collaborate with foreign institutions so as not to have to rule out these methods.
Artificial insemination has been around since 1978
If you have been unable to conceive after a prolonged period, your gynecologist will provide you with detailed counseling and refer you to specialists in this field. It may be interesting to note that since the first test-tube baby was born in 1978, several million babies have been born through this method. Today, approximately 250,000 babies are born worldwide each year as a result of artificial insemination.
