First, a definition: The word “Ayurveda” comes from ancient Indian and translates into English as “knowledge of life” or “wisdom of life.” It brings together empirical knowledge and philosophy to promote people’s physical, emotional, and mental health. Ayurvedic massage is just one of many well-known aspects of Ayurveda. This article offers you the opportunity to learn more about this specific form of Ayurveda.
Abhyanga – a special Ayurvedic massage
As with many Ayurvedic massages, warm oil is one of the main components of Abhyanga. However, tea can just as easily be used in place of oil. In most cases—at least in the countries of origin—two massage therapists attend to you when you undergo this special form of Ayurvedic massage. It is essentially a full-body massage. The client’s skin absorbs the oil—and thus its active ingredients—very well. The following oils are definitely among the most popular:
- Sesame oil
- Coconut oil
- Castor oil
- Mustard oil
- Many different herbal oils
Oils that have not been absorbed by the skin after an Abhyanga Ayurvedic massage are often blotted away using special powders or chickpea flour.
Other Types of Ayurvedic Massage
If you don’t want to have a full-body massage, the massage therapist can, of course, limit the treatment to specific parts of the body. A foot massage or an Ayurvedic facial massage are good alternatives. In what’s known as a Marma massage, specific points on the body are activated and stimulated. In addition, abdominal massages are offered, and you can receive Ayurvedic massages that focus on pouring oil over the forehead. However, oils aren’t required for every Ayurvedic massage. The treatment can also be performed using rice stamps, silk gloves alone, or—as mentioned above—tea.
The Effects of an Ayurvedic Massage
- Stress is reduced
- Measures to address sleep disorders are to be taken
- The psyche is stabilized
- It has a positive effect on the nerves
- We should take steps to counteract aging
Even if not everyone in the West is convinced of the touted benefits of Ayurvedic massages, it’s definitely worth giving it a try. After all, even if you can’t massage away certain signs of aging, for example, you at least have the chance to relax deeply and forget everything around you.
