Tips for Dealing with Heartbreak

We’ve all probably needed advice on how to cope with heartbreak at least once in our lives. At first, the emotions are intense and you feel butterflies in your stomach. You see the world through rose-colored glasses, and people in love feel like they’re floating on air. However, when you drift so far from reality, there’s a high risk of falling hard if the love doesn’t live up to its promises. People fall in love; people fall out of love. Unfortunately, today’s society has become fast-paced and superficial. People usually want things to be comfortable and easy. But a long-term relationship, in which partners don’t just live side by side but truly live together, requires effort from both sides. If neither communication nor spending time together helps, a breakup is inevitable. Everyone has heard tips for dealing with heartbreak at some point. But each person processes the pain in their heart in their own unique way. Therefore, there can be no one-size-fits-all advice for heartbreak .

In the Beginning Is Heartbreak

If the breakup is inevitable, both partners—the man and the woman—must come to terms with the situation. A breakup is just as emotional as the infatuation that came before it. People don’t want to accept that they’re alone, so they look for reasons and ask themselves, “Whose fault is it?” Many try to maintain as much contact with their ex-partner as before and bombard him or her with emails, texts, and phone calls. Heartbreak can vary in intensity; for some of my clients, it’s “over” after half a day, while others need weeks to get over it and experience real physical pain due to the breakup. Tips for dealing with heartbreak can help ease the pain a little:

  1. Accepting the Breakup
  2. It's okay to cry!
  3. Reflecting on the past and cherishing it as a wonderful time
  4. Distracting yourself with music, work, or going out with friends can help when you're dealing with intense heartache
  5. Talk to someone you trust—get it all off your chest!
  6. It's time for a change: clothing style, hairstyle,…
  7. Facing the Truth: What Wasn't So Great About Your Last Relationship?
  8. Don't shut yourself off! Especially in a situation like this, it's important to reach out to friends and family.
  9. Don't rush into a new relationship just to avoid being alone. Strengthen your sense of self!
  10. Constant contact with an ex-partner makes it harder to come to terms with the past
  11. If your heartbreak is that intense, writing a letter can help. It can express all your feelings and disappointments, and you don't even have to send it. Just the act of writing itself helps.

Heartbreak isn't worth it, my darling…

The song of the same name makes it clear that while heartbreak isn’t worth it, if you love someone and get hurt, the pain is inevitably intense. But the sooner you accept that you and your partner don’t have a future together, the sooner you can look toward the future again—and meet someone interesting sooner than you think. Or you can enjoy being single with all its perks; everyone is different in this regard. Unfortunately, there’s no one-size-fits-all advice for dealing with heartbreak, since every woman and every man reacts differently to a breakup or being left.

Do something nice for yourself!

The most important thing in this situation is you! Boost your self-esteem. You’re a very special person and lovable. It just wasn’t meant to be, and now you’re both going your separate ways, but that doesn’t mean you should blame yourself entirely. Life is too short for half-measures. Focus on yourself; do something nice for yourself. Tips for getting over heartbreak can include a completely new look—or even a new hairstyle. Treat yourself to a vacation or go out on the town with friends. It was a wonderful time, but the future will be just as wonderful.

Don't let heartbreak set in in the first place

Ideally, you wouldn’t need any advice on how to deal with heartbreak in the first place. If you want to go through life together, both partners need to work on themselves and on the relationship. And of course, things won’t always be harmonious—arguments and the reconciliation that follows are also part of a relationship. Talk to your partner! Make it clear to them what’s important to you—and, above all, that they’re important to you. Master life together as a team and be happy—then you won’t need any tips for dealing with heartbreak.
