Exercise is healthy and keeps you fit! Nutritionists preach this day in and day out, but what happens when you’re expecting a baby? Pregnant women are advised to take it easy and get plenty of rest, but the truth is that regular exercise—even during pregnancy—helps you build up energy for childbirth and stay fit. In addition, exercise can help reduce or even prevent pregnancy-related discomforts, such as foot and back pain, varicose veins, or fluid retention. Digestion, which often causes problems for pregnant women, can also be stimulated by exercise in addition to a balanced diet. Another significant benefit is that a fit body can withstand the rigors of childbirth much better than an unfit one. It’s important, however, to exercise in moderation and only if the pregnancy is progressing without complications—too much exertion can harm the unborn baby and even lead to illness or, in extreme cases, a miscarriage.
What sports are suitable for pregnant women?
Expectant mothers should keep in mind that certain safety precautions always apply when exercising during pregnancy. High-risk activities are, of course, off-limits; sports such as karate, judo, surfing, or inline skating should be avoided. Skiing and snowboarding are also too dangerous during pregnancy, as is scuba diving, since the baby must always have an optimal supply of oxygen. On the other hand, gentle sports that are easy on the back and joints are ideal, as are exercises that strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. Suitable activities include, for example, gymnastics, yoga, swimming, or leisurely hiking and walking.
What to Look Out For
Exercise during pregnancy should never leave you completely exhausted; therefore, high-intensity training is not recommended, as exhaustion and overheating could harm the baby. Exercise sessions should therefore be structured in a relaxed and steady manner, allowing for regular workouts over shorter periods of time. Workout clothes should not be too tight, and you should rest thoroughly after each session. It goes without saying that you need to stay well-hydrated and that the expectant mother is welcome to treat herself to a snack between workouts. Exercise during pregnancy is definitely allowed, albeit with certain restrictions. Your body will thank you for it even after the birth.
