Learn about some important factors to consider when choosing the right mattress.
How well do your hips sink?
No matter what shape your hips are, a soft center section in the mattress is absolutely essential. However, a mattress that is too soft would cause your hips to sink in too deeply when lying on your side, and your shoulders and head would no longer be supported optimally. Therefore, the pelvis must be stabilized, and the shoulders should sink in comfortably. Only then is an optimal sleeping position ensured.
Does it provide sufficient support for your lower back/lumbar region?
Especially when lying on your side, it’s important to ensure that your waist is adequately supported from below. If there isn’t enough support, your body sags, and it becomes particularly difficult to position your head properly. This is one of the most important features your new mattress must have! Because if your spine isn’t properly supported by the mattress, it will curve during the night. Normally, it should be relieved of pressure and allowed to recover during the night; however, if there isn’t enough support, it will cause you pain in the morning.
Is your shoulder in the optimal position?
Excessive pressure on our shoulder can restrict blood flow in the arm and cause parts of the arm to go numb. It also causes our body to move our shoulder into a “protective position,” which leads to muscle tension.
Is your neck/head positioned correctly?
It’s best to choose your pillow while lying on your back. However, you should also use the same flat pillow—the one that’s ideal for you when lying on your back—when lying on your side. In that position, though, you may find that it’s too low. Compensating for this, however, isn’t the pillow’s job—it’s the job of the mattress and/or the slatted frame. Once your shoulder sinks in accordingly, it will fit perfectly!
However, if your pillow isn't designed for that, you'll start pressing down on it and squeezing it—but that's the wrong approach. Unfortunately, because this factor is too often overlooked, many people suffer from improper head positioning. This is a common cause of head and neck tension.
