Vaginal yeast infections cause many women to suffer

Few topics are considered even more taboo among women than intimate health issues, yet three out of four women experience a vaginal yeast infection at least once in their lives.

Probably the most commonly cited symptom of a vaginal yeast infection is unbearable itching in the genital area, accompanied by severe redness in the affected areas. In addition, there is a whitish, clumpy discharge, which in most cases is perceived as relatively odorless. In contrast, in the case of a bacterial vaginal infection, those affected usually notice an odor described as “fishy.”

Vaginal Yeast Infection – The Symptoms

However, the symptoms that most drastically limit a woman's normal daily life are the uncomfortable pains experienced both during urination and during sexual intercourse.

Causes of a vaginal yeast infection

The problem itself is still considered a taboo subject today—one that people prefer to keep quiet about because it is associated with poor intimate hygiene. In fact, however, yeast is a completely normal part of the vaginal flora and only becomes dangerous when the acidic pH of this environment is neutralized, allowing the pathogen to multiply unchecked.

The reasons for this include:

  • Stress
  • Improper intimate hygiene (washing too frequently with water that is too hot and alkaline soaps; using intimate sprays that contain perfume or alcohol)
  • Weakened immune system (following an illness or during pregnancy)
  • Chronic illnesses, such as diabetes
  • Hormonal fluctuations (during the menstrual cycle)
  • Taking medications that also affect the vaginal flora
  • Inappropriate clothing (too tight and not breathable)
  • Even sexual intercourse can be included in this category

How do you treat a vaginal yeast infection?

If you have a vaginal yeast infection, it is highly recommended that you see a gynecologist to learn about treatment options tailored specifically to the course of your condition. Possible components of treatment include vaginal suppositories, oral tablets, and ointments for external application to the affected genital areas.

Pharmacies also carry a number of over-the-counter products that promise quick relief from symptoms and help fight the yeast infection—but if you experience frequent recurrences, seeing your gynecologist should be your top priority. After that, the main focus should be on restoring the vagina’s acidic environment with the help of lactic acid bacteria (Döderlein bacteria).

Any woman who has already suffered from a vaginal yeast infection one or more times should, after successful treatment, try to eliminate easily avoidable causes—such as improper intimate hygiene or wearing clothing that can cause irritation—from her life. This way, she can minimize the risk of another outbreak and its unpleasant consequences.
